With record hours of sunshine, Southern Spain is among the best beach destinations in Europe. Advertised as ‘Costa del Sol’ (Sunny Coast), the area between Marbella and Malaga is much-appreciated for its blue-flagged beaches, but also for the numerous facilities and hotels available to tourists. The proverbial nightlife also makes the region a favorite among European youths. No matter what your reason tho visit this popular region, it is always useful to know which are the top 5 beaches on Costa del Sol:

Puerto Banus

Puerto Banus represents for visitors on Costa del Sol what Malibu is for California. This glamorous resort on the Andalusian coast is known to attract a very exclusive clientele, so if you are the confident type who feels like home among millionaires and movie stars, you must definitely give it a try. Nevertheless, chances are low that you meet your millionaire or favorite star on a public beach. Instead, you can join one of the local sports clubs, go out in the fanciest discotheques and frequent only the small, private beaches – ideally with a cocktail bar.

Nikki Beach, Marbella

Speaking of exclusive beaches, the Nikki Beach in Marbella is well-worthy of this category. The private beach is actually a very glitzy beach club. Its privileged guests – which are usually football stars or eccentric heirs – get to choose between beach-front divans and hammocks, are only served signature cocktails and gourmet food and are invited each night to an exclusive ‘white’ beach party (guests can only dress in white).

El Cristo

In the westernmost extremity of Costa del Sol, very close to Gibraltar, you’ll find this beautiful, cozy beach. The rugged coastline and the crystal-clean water make this particular beach seem like a well-hidden gem. You’ll also find it to be very family-friendly, offering ideal conditions for swimming and snorkeling.

Bounty Beach, Marbella

A very popular beach in Marbella is Bounty Beach. This lively beach on Costa del Sol resembles the party-loving Ibiza under many aspects: it is frequented by young people, the happy music never stops, the food is cheap and abundant. And, as soon as the sun sets, the beach becomes the hottest open air dance club.

Palya El Canuelo, Nerja

Even wondered how Costa del Sol beaches used to look like before the tourist boom? Well, the Playa El Canuelo near Nerja is likely to satisfy your curiosity. As part of a protected area, the beach has managed to escape the intensive development. There will be no hotels, nu music, no beach vendors here: just the sound of waves. The laid-back atmosphere makes it prefect for couples and nudists.
