The sun-kissed beaches on Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Costa Tropical have transformed Spain into one of Europe’s top holiday destination – if not the first. However, if you are looking for some truly spectacular beaches and some less crowded resorts, then you should turn your attention to the Northern part of Spain.

Regions like Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country can be a continuous source of surprised for those willing to explore their rugged coasts. Here, mountains and sea make a dramatic contrast, and you will find as many, charming little coves and secluded beaches as you will find medieval castles and picturesque little villages. Here are some splendid beaches for you to check out:

Oyambre, Cantabria

Popular with backpackers, Oyambre is one of Cantabria’s finest beaches. Because it is part of a nature reserve – Parque Natural de Oyambre, the beach is one of the most natural and savage you’ll ever find. The setting is also exceptional – not only is the park home to interesting marine ecosystems, but it is also within miles from Picos de Europa, one of Spain’s most beautiful national parks.

Playa de Guadamía, Asturias

This small, isolated beach is everything you could wish for in terms of location and natural beauty. Set against the breathtaking mountain tops of Picos de Europa, the beach is separated from the sea by a narrow corridor. When the corridor is flooded, it turns into a small river, thus offering a unique experience of the sea.

La Concha, San Sebastián

The basque city of San Sebastian is a jewel of a city. And you will realize this right away when you see La Concha, the main beach in San Sebastian. A wide beach with mountains in the back, La Concha will make you feel that you are on the French Riviera. Although the beach might get quite crowded in summer, it is definitely worth seeing it.

Playa del Borizo, Asturias

If you follow the coast of Asturias, you will discover splendid, secluded beaches at almost every step. Playa de Borizo is certainly one of these wonderful surprise beaches you will find in your way. Tucked between cliffs and green pastures, the beach is not big, but very nice and quiet. Not far from the beach you’ll be greeted by quaint little villages and countryside inns.

Playa de las Catedrales, Galicia

Playa de las Catedrales is by far one of the most amazing beaches in Northern Spain – and, for all I know, in the whole Spain. The ‘cathedrals’ are nothing but some huge stone pillars that have been sculpted by the waves and winds, and which reveal a natural stone arch at low tide.
