A Live Music Guide to Barcelona

We all know that Barcelona is popular with partygoers, but this doesn’t make it less of an ideal destination for music lovers as well. Actually, when it comes to live music, Barcelona excels at every chapter: here one can find both the underground bands playing contemporary Spanish rock and the virtuoso jazz musicians engaged in a jam session. In addition to the numerous jazz clubs and live music establishments, in Barcelona you will also find some of the best flamenco groups, as well as internationally renowned classical music events. Without further introduction, here comes a live music guide to Barcelona:

Classical Music Concerts and Events

I’ll start by giving classical music the lion’s share and present you some of the possibilities to explore in case you are passionate about this musical genre. Some popular venues hosting weekly if not daily representations are the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Conservatori Liceu and the impressive L’Auditori. Major musical events will most often be hosted by the Palau de la Musica Catalana.

Music Clubs

It would be a pity to visit Barcelona without taking a peak of its thriving contemporary music scene. The easiest way to do this is by knowing the long-established clubs that always have live music on the menu. Here we can count places like the Fihlarmionic, Sala B, Bikini or La Paloma. Jazz aficionados might try their luck at The Jazz Room, Jamboree or The Harlem Jazz Club, which all have their live jazz/blues/jam session nights.
There is a certain category of music clubs which I would also like to present in this section, which contains the traditional music venues. Here we can very well count the Centre Artesa Tradicionarius and the Tablao Flamenco Cordobes where one can learn a thing or two about the flamenco or other Spanish-born dances.

Concerts and Festivals

There are usually two major concert halls where most of Barcelona’s musical events take place: Sala Apolo and Sala Razzmatzz. Along with one or two bigger stadiums, these have been the locations for the majority of performances and international artist concerts.
Barcelona is the host for numerous annual musical events, from music fests to fairs. Many of these events manage to bring together an impressive lineup, featuring international artists of any genre, from hip-hop to acid jazz. Depending on the time of your visit, you might as well get a chance to join the roaring crowds at any of the following events: Sonar, Blues and Rimes, Festival of the Guitar, Summercase or Primavera Sound.
